Philippine volcano spews ash plume into the sky, prompting school closures
A restive Philippine volcano briefly erupted Tuesday on a central island, sending a 4-kilometer (2.4-mile) plume of ash and debris into the sky and forcing authorities to suspend school classes in four villages due to ashfall, officials said. There were no reports of injuries or damage from Mount Kanlaon’s latest eruption after dawn that lasted more than an hour and scattered ash in at least four farming villages southwest of the volcano on Negros island, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said. Kanlaon last erupted in December, prompting the evacuation of thousands of villagers, many of whom remained in emergency shelters on Tuesday as the volcano continued showing signs of restiveness, the Office of Civil Defense said.

The Philippines' Mount Kanlaon Volcano Spectacularly Erupts
This incredible footage shows the Mount Kanlaon volcano in the central Philippines erupting on the morning of 8 April 2025. The volcano sent a vast column of ash high into the sky, prompting warnings for residents and schools in the surrounding area. The volcano, which is located on the Negros Island, produced a towering ash plume that reached up to 4,000 metres above the summit and drifted to the southwest. The eruption, which lasted nearly an hour and ended at around 6:47am, was described as “moderately explosive” and triggered fast-moving flows of hot gas and volcanic matter. Large volcanic fragments were hurled a few hundred metres around the crater, igniting vegetation near the summit. Ashfall was reported in several localities in Negros Occidental, including parts of La Carlota City, Bago City, and La Castellana. In some areas, residents also reported the strong odour of sulphur. Fortunately, many nearby communities had already been evacuated following an earlier eruption in December, which authorities say helped minimise immediate risk.

Philippines' Kanlaon volcano eruption resumes, says seismology agency
MANILA (Reuters) -A volcano in the central Philippines erupted on Tuesday morning, ejecting an ash-laden plume reaching around 4,000 metres (2.5 miles) high, the seismology agency said. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said alert level 3 remained in effect over Mount Kanlaon, where it has been since December 2024 after an earlier explosive event. Level 3, on a scale of 5, means there is an increased risk of lava flows and the potential for a hazardous eruption within weeks.
